Strategy for playing a pair of Eights
Eights are to be played in a similar fashion to sevens
in that it is unwise to call a raise or re-raise with
your valuable custom poker chips. But if you are sitting
in a late position at the poker table and there have
been a fair few callers behind you, the pot is so
full of custom poker chips that it may be worth calling
and hoping to spike a set on the flop. This will then
give your custom poker chip stack a big boost (as
long as you are prepared to pull out after the flop
if you see a flop that doesn’t inspire you with
confidence). But we only recommend that you take this
sort of action if your custom poker chip stack is
fairly low. It is a gamble which could pay off and
get you back in the poker match. If you are doing
fairly well, there is no point risking any custom
poker chips. You should sit back and wait for the
next hand to be dealt.
An ideal flop when you hold eights or sevens is obviously
a third to make your set. This is sure to give you
the boss hand after the flop and if you gamble and
bet right, you will come out with the custom poker
chip pot. However, this rarely happens as planned.
The next best situation is for all three cards on
the board to be lower than your pair, so that you
have what’s called an ‘overpair’
and that the three cards connect to yours to give
you an open-ended straight draw. You are sure to bet
custom poker chips aggressively faced with this as
you have 10 outs before the turn (8 for the straight
and 2 to make a set), giving you a 40% chance of hitting
it at the turn. Watch out for connected flops which
don’t give you a straight draw. These poker
hands are sure to eat up your custom poker chips as
you are only chasing 2 outs (8%-4% chance). So once
you see this nightmare flop, pull out, muck your cards
and save your custom poker chips.
Even if you have hit the best flop, some other poker
player may have an overpair to your pair! If another
poker player has been betting aggressively with custom
poker chips pre-flop, you should act cautiously and
pull out and save your custom poker chips if you don’t
make your set.
